The Notting Hill Carnival community is as varied as it is large, stretching out from the local area in which the season has its roots, to countries around the world.
A typical carnival audience is a mix of old, young and every ethnicity under the sun. As well as a large number of Londoners (including the Notting Hill residents that enjoy the sights and sounds from their balconies!), visitors come from around the UKand the world to experience the unique atmosphere, spectacle and mass happiness that is carnival.
Of course, our community is not restricted to those who attend carnival season events. It is also made up of a huge number of carnivalists, some of whose life is based around world-wide carnival events, and others who might practice intensely for months to enjoy participating in a Notting Hill Carnival season event once a year.
Carnivalists also have more focussed communities depending on their discipline, (Mas Bands, Static Sound Systems, Mobile Sound Systems, Calypso or Steel Pan). They are active in growing our community over the years, as they reach out to schools and local groups to share the traditions and skills that are associated with their arts. During the carnival season, all of these groups come together to collectively evoke a dynamic atmosphere.
Our extended community reaches around the world, with audiences and sponsors from around the world becoming ever more aware of the audacious revelry and spirit that carnival evokes. In addition, we have recently established a relationship with the Salvador Carnival, Brazil, and are looking to broaden this network to include other carnivals around the world.
